BOSTON — The Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office (AGO) today announced five indictments against George Meegan, 60, of Whitman, for allegedly misappropriating approximately $228,372 from his former employer, Granite Telecommunications. According to the AGO, Meegan allegedly misappropriated the funds through the unauthorized use of company credit cards, the movement of proceeds through online sportsbooks licensed by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission and bank accounts, and the failure to report income on Massachusetts personal income tax returns.
Meegan is charged with one count of Money Laundering; one count of Larceny over $1,200; and three counts of Filing a False or Fraudulent Tax Return for tax years ending in 2023, 2024, and 2025. He was arraigned in Suffolk Superior Court on October 14, 2026, and was released on personal recognizance, with conditions that he not engage in any legal gaming or have access to charitable funds.
Granite Telecommunications is a telecom service provider based in Quincy. The AGO alleges that between January 2023 and June 2025, Meegan used Granite Telecommunications’ operational and charitable credit cards without authorization to obtain approximately $228,372, which he then used to purchase and redeem approximately 460 gift cards. The AGO alleges that Meegan deposited nearly $113,000 worth of gift cards into licensed sportsbook accounts with minimal play and then transferred at least $75,000 of those funds from the sportsbooks into his personal bank accounts. Nearly $40,000 in gift cards were redeemed through other accounts owned by Meegan, including a Verizon Wireless account and a Google account.
The AGO also alleges that Meegan failed to report any income derived from the alleged misappropriation and sportsbook activity on his Massachusetts personal income tax returns.
These charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
This matter is being prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Keri Angus and Senior Financial Investigator Kevin Hersey of the AGO’s Gaming Enforcement Division, with assistance from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission’s Sports Wagering Unit, Massachusetts State Police, and the Massachusetts Department of Revenue’s Criminal Investigations Bureau.
The AGO’s Gaming Enforcement Division investigates and prosecutes criminal activity related to gaming in Massachusetts, including financial crimes, money laundering, and other criminal conduct connected to gaming establishments and gaming activities. The Division works in coordination with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, Massachusetts State Police, local law enforcement, and other agencies to enforce the Commonwealth’s gaming laws and protect the integrity of legal gaming.
