Hyde Park man convicted of shooting at officers while on parole to be sentenced next week
BOSTON, August 24, 2025 – A Hyde Park man will be sentenced next week after a Suffolk County jury found him guilty today in a 2025 Nubian Square shooting that left a Boston police officer wounded, Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden announced.
DAIQUAN RICE, 32, was convicted of assault and battery with a firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, and carrying a loaded firearm without a license.
Rice will be sentenced on September 1 at 9:00 a.m. in courtroom 806 of Suffolk Superior.
Rice has previously been convicted of several firearm-related offenses out of Suffolk Superior Court where he received a seven-to-10-year prison sentence with three years of probation to follow. Rice was on probation and parole at the time of the 2025 shooting.
On September 12, 2025, at about 12:45 a.m., officers were patrolling the area of Washington and Dudley Street to address community complaints about quality-of-life issues in the Nubian Square area, including complaints of people congregating in and around General Edward O. Gourdin African American Veterans Memorial Park. Officers noted several people in the park with one person standing away from the group smoking. The park has posted signs indicating the park closes at dusk and no smoking is allowed.
As officers approached the male standing alone, later identified as Rice, he walked in the opposite direction. Rice fled down Washington Street when officers exited their cruiser. Officers followed as Rice turned right onto Archer Terrace toward Kenilworth Street. Moments later Rice opened fire, striking one officer in the arm. Officers returned fire, striking Rice. Officers recovered a loaded firearm with a large-capacity magazine when they arrested Rice.
“The men and women who protect our streets and neighborhoods are always an instant away from grave danger. That danger at the hands of this defendant came in the form of bullets that could have killed one of the officers or anyone else in the area that night. I’m so grateful that the officer survived and was able to overcome his injuries. We will never relent in prosecuting anyone who harms or attempts to harm our law enforcement officers,” Hayden said.
All charged individuals are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
