State Land for Homes advances 5,600 units, administration announces
The Healey-Driscoll administration on June 2 announced that the state had advanced plans for more than 5,600 new housing units on underutilized state-owned land in 33 municipalities through the State Land for Homes initiative.
Launched in June 2025 and overseen by the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance, State Land for Homes streamlines the process for identifying and disposing of surplus state land as a strategy to accelerate housing production and transform public properties.
There are now nearly 700 acres of surplus state-owned land at various stages of development being advanced in communities across Massachusetts, according to the administration, including Bedford, Bridgewater, Lowell, Plymouth, Salem, Salisbury, Sherborn and Westborough.
In a prepared statement, Lowell City Manager Thomas Golden Jr. said that partnering with the state to redevelop two courthouse sites will “yield economic development benefits for our downtown, create much-needed housing, and put these properties on the tax rolls for the first time in generations.”
