BOSTON — Governor Maura Healey today joined Interim Secretary of Transportation and MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng, local officials, community leaders and stakeholders to celebrate the completion of major upgrades at Foxboro Commuter Rail Station ahead of this summer’s World Cup matches at Boston Stadium.
Completed in less than one year, the project marks the fastest permanent station construction project in MBTA history and will significantly improve access to one of Massachusetts’ largest event destinations and the surrounding community as the state prepares to welcome visitors from around the world this summer.
“As Massachusetts prepares to welcome the world this summer, we’re delivering the modern transportation infrastructure needed to support residents, visitors and our regional economy,” said Governor Maura Healey. “These upgrades at Foxboro Station will help thousands of fans safely and efficiently travel to World Cup matches and other major events while creating lasting transportation improvements for commuters for years to come. I’m grateful to the MBTA, the Kraft Group, Suffolk, construction crews, local leaders and all of our partners who worked together to complete this project in record time.”
“We’re making sure people can get where they need to go safely, efficiently and affordably,” said Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll. “These improvements at Foxboro Station will help support thousands of riders during the World Cup while creating long-term benefits for residents, commuters and everyone traveling to events in the region for years to come.”
“The Foxboro Station build was essential to allow the MBTA the ability to provide unprecedented service levels for the upcoming World Cup matches at Boston Stadium. Not only did we accelerate the full construction of this station in under a year, but we found ways to progress work during a challenging winter with record snowfall, while still providing service to the station, and supporting many special events at Gillette in parallel with construction,” said Interim Secretary and General Manager Eng. “This achievement demonstrates the MBTA’s commitment along with our industry partners to continue building a transit system that the public deserves and expects. I’m proud of how everyone stepped up, embracing the challenge and delivering meaningful projects that support mobility and the economic vitality of the Commonwealth and region. These enhancements wouldn’t have been possible without the leadership of the Healey-Driscoll Administration, our Legislative partners, the municipalities we serve, and many more, and I am blessed to be part of the MBTA team for their work to deliver these improvements at Foxboro Station that will benefit so many for decades to come.”
The upgraded station officially opened to Commuter Rail passengers today and includes a new 800-foot-long fully accessible platform with level boarding, expanded passenger capacity, improved lighting and signage, new seating and canopies, upgraded communications systems, and additional safety and accessibility improvements.
"The completion of the new Foxboro Station is a significant milestone for our community and the region. As Foxborough prepares to welcome visitors from around the world for the FIFA World Cup, this investment will help provide safe, reliable, and accessible transportation while showcasing the very best of Massachusetts,” said Foxborough Town Manager Paige Duncan. “While the station will play an important role during this historic summer, its benefits will extend far beyond the World Cup by improving connectivity and expanding transportation options for residents, employees, and visitors for years to come. We are grateful to the MBTA, MassDOT, Governor Healey's Administration, the Kraft Group, and our many partners who helped make this project a reality."
“Massachusetts deserves transportation that is modern, reliable, safe, accessible, and affordable — not only for major international events, but for the needs of everyday commuters,” said State Senator Paul Feeney (D-Foxborough). “Whether it’s for the people of our region that live here and work in Boston and want to avoid sitting in soul-crushing traffic on the highway, or the folks that are staying in Boston coming here to spend money and support our local businesses, the completion of upgrades to the Foxborough MBTA Station reflect the Commonwealth’s real investment in transportation infrastructure and responsible preparation for world-class events that will safely accommodate and welcome visitors now and in the future. I thank the Healey-Driscoll Administration and the MBTA for their investment in Foxborough and ongoing focus on strengthening public transportation for residents across Massachusetts.”
“I am excited about the expansion of the Foxboro train station and the opportunities it creates as we prepare to welcome the world to Foxborough for the FIFA World Cup. This investment will improve transportation, support local businesses, and help ensure fans have a great experience when they visit our community,” said State Representative Michael Chaisson (R-Foxborough). "The upgrades were accelerated in preparation for the seven World Cup matches being hosted at Boston Stadium this summer. The MBTA expects up to 20,000 passengers to utilize dedicated event train service during each match.”
The project was completed through close coordination between the MBTA, labor teams, contractor crews, the Kraft Group, the Town of Foxboro, and the Healey-Driscoll Administration. Construction was phased to allow the station to remain operational throughout the project while continuing to support concerts, sporting events, and other major events at Gillette Stadium. The construction partner is Suffolk.
“Foxboro Station represents what can be achieved when public and private partners work together toward a common goal. This investment will benefit fans, commuters and visitors to Gillette Stadium year-round while helping us welcome the world back to Foxborough for the FIFA World Cup,” said Robert Kraft, Chairman & CEO of The Kraft Group. “We are grateful to Governor Healey and Lt. Governor Driscoll, Secretary Eng, the MBTA, MassDOT, the Town of Foxborough, Suffolk Construction, VHB, and all of our partners whose leadership and collaboration made this project possible.”
“The completion of the Foxboro Commuter Rail Station marks a major milestone in our tournament preparations as we work toward delivering a safe and welcoming experience for fans,” said Mike Loynd, President of Boston 26. "We congratulate Governor Healey and Lieutenant Governor Driscoll, the MBTA, the Kraft Group, and local officials on this significant achievement — one that reflects the close coordination and collaborative spirit that has defined our planning from day one.”
The upgraded station will continue serving residents and visitors long after this summer’s World Cup matches, improving regional transportation access for future sporting events, concerts, and large-scale gatherings in Foxboro.
The MBTA continues advancing initiatives to improve access, affordability, and reliability across the Commuter Rail network. Earlier this year, Governor Healey and Interim Secretary and General Manager Eng announced a series of summer fare promotions and discounts on the MBTA Commuter Rail to lower costs for riders, support regular commuters, and encourage more people to choose public transportation as Massachusetts prepares for a busy summer of major events across the state. The promotions include Free Fridays, 50 percent discounts on monthly passes, and additional fare programs running throughout June, July, and August. Monthly passholders are expected to save between $321 and $639 over the summer, depending on their route.
