Governor Healey Welcomes Deputy Prime Minister of Spain to Massachusetts State House

BOSTON — Governor Maura Healey today welcomed Spain´s First Deputy Prime Minister, Carlos Cuerpo, to the Massachusetts State House, a day after celebrating the Spanish government’s creation of a trade office in Massachusetts and a venture capital fund to invest in biotech firms from Spain and Massachusetts. They were joined by Ambassador of Spain to the U.S Angeles Moreno, Consul General Ana Durán de la Colina, former United States, Ambassador to Spain Alan Solomont and other representatives of the Spanish government.
“It was great to welcome Spain’s First Deputy Prime Minister Carlos Cuerpo to Massachusetts and the State House. Massachusetts’ partnership with Spain dates back hundreds of years, and today we are committed to not only reaffirming that partnership but growing it,” said Governor Healey. “Spain’s investments in Massachusetts’ economy are a testament to our leadership in innovation and technology, as well as our strength in competing for foreign investment. We thank Deputy Prime Minister Cuerpo for his leadership and look forward to continuing to work together to strengthen our economic and cultural ties.”
“In an increasingly uncertain world, Spain is choosing partnership,” said Deputy Prime Minister of Spain Carlos Cuerpo. “That is why we are deepening our commitment to the United States and to Massachusetts in particular, as a strategic destination for Spanish investment and innovation. Massachusetts and Spain share the same values: open economies, world-class research, and a belief in collaboration."
Spain is a strong trading partner to Massachusetts, with over $750 million worth of goods exchanged in 2025. Massachusetts imported $321 million in goods from Spain, including, chemical products, electric machinery, Industrial machinery, and fish and crustaceans. Massachusetts exported $433 million in goods to Spain in 2024, including pharma products, organic chemicals, industrial machinery, and medical surgical instruments. Massachusetts' trade with Spain supports innovation, and technology businesses as well as the state’s aquaculture industry. Massachusetts is also home to Spanish businesses such as CMZ Machinery Group, Santander Bank, Mapfre Insurance, Avangrid, and CT Engineering.
Governor Healey has made it a priority to meet with foreign officials when they visit Massachusetts to discuss business and trade opportunities, including His Majesty King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs, former President of the Dominican Republic Leonel Fernandez, Singapore's Ambassador to the United States Lui Tuck Yew, Consul General of Japan Seiichiro Takahashi, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China Chen Li, Consul General of the United Kingdom to New England David Clay, Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands Ahmed Dadoum, Premiers of Eastern Canadian Provinces, and Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Niamh Kennedy.
