March 31, 2026

WALTHAM – The Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) Board of Trustees today announced the selection of Theodore A. (Ted) Calianos II, MD, FACS, a resident of Cotuit, as the Society’s next executive vice president and CEO. Calianos will assume the role on June 1, 2026, succeeding Lois Dehls Cornell, who will retire in May after a decade of service.
“I’m honored to step into this role at a pivotal time for our profession. Physicians today are navigating rapid change, growing pressures, and rising skepticism around science and medicine,” Calianos said. “The MMS has an important role to play in supporting physicians at every stage of their careers – by advocating for them, connecting them, and helping them deliver the best possible care. I’ve seen that impact first-hand, and I’m excited to build on it and ensure that the MMS remains a strong, relevant voice for physicians and patients across Massachusetts.”
Calianos previously served as MMS president (2022–2023), and he has held numerous leadership roles at the Society. Prior to accepting his new role with the Society, he was chief medical officer of Falmouth Hospital and medical director and a plastic surgeon at Cape Cod Healthcare/Medical Affiliates of Cape Cod. He earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch. His career reflects a broad perspective, having worked as both a solo practitioner and an employed physician.
“Dr. Ted Calianos has a deep knowledge of our organization and an exceptional understanding of the challenges facing health care and the medical profession,” said Olivia Liao, MD, president of the MMS. “A dedicated advocate for physicians and patients, Dr. Calianos’ extensive experience as a physician-leader makes him uniquely and ideally qualified to continue the Society’s efforts to promote science, medical practice, and public trust in health care.”
Calianos’ selection follows a national search led by the Board’s search committee, chaired by MMS Immediate Past President Hugh Taylor, MD.
