BRAINTREE — The Healey-Driscoll Administration today announced that 32 local police departments will receive state funds to create or expand body-worn camera programs, marking the final round of grants awarded through Massachusetts’ five-year investment in body-worn camera technology.

The Law Enforcement Body-Worn Camera Program was established through the state’s FY22-FY26 Capital Plan. This round of grant funding, totaling approximately $3,490,000, represents the final awards issued through the program. Since FY22, local police departments across Massachusetts have invested nearly $13 million in state grant funds to develop and expand body-worn camera programs.

“Body-worn cameras help establish clear, consistent standards for policing across Massachusetts,” said Governor Maura Healey. “This investment supports professionalism and accountability statewide and helps police departments build trust with their communities.”

“This program reflects our commitment to partnering with municipalities on public safety,” said Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll. “By helping cover the cost of launching or expanding body-worn cameras programs, we are giving communities the resources they need to meet statewide expectations.”

“The partnership between local police and the communities they serve is one of the best tools available to support public safety,” said Public Safety and Security Secretary Gina Kwon. “Body-worn cameras can help strengthen these relationships through increased transparency and accountability, while equipping law enforcement with technology to enhance investigations.”

“This grant program has been incredibly well received by police departments and communities across Massachusetts,” said OGR Executive Director Kevin Stanton. “The initial costs of creating a body-worn camera program can be a hurdle for many communities. These grants help ensure that municipalities across the state have access to the resources necessary to launch and grow a successful body-worn camera program.”

In addition to purchasing body-worn cameras, the grant program supports related costs including onsite data storage and equipment such as batteries and charging docks. During the program’s first four years, funding supported 144 local police departments in purchasing more than 4,800 body-worn cameras, along with equipment needed to operate and maintain them.
