BOSTON — The Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD) is proud to announce that Lila L. Roberts, Esq. has been appointed as the Chief of Investigations following nearly a year of exemplary service in the acting role.
Over the past year, Chief Roberts has provided steady, forward-thinking leadership during a pivotal period for the agency. Under their direction, the Investigations Division strengthened internal case management practices, implemented new policies to increase efficiency and consistency in investigations, and enhanced training and mentorship initiatives to support staff development across the Investigations Division Units and Commission offices. Their leadership has resulted in measurable improvements in workflow coordination across the division and strengthened cross-unit collaboration, particularly salient as the MCAD will be launching its new case management system and publishing new procedural regulations in the coming months.
“Over the last year, Lila has exceeded every expectation we set for the Acting Chief role,” said Michael Memmolo, Executive Director at the MCAD. “They have demonstrated not only exceptional judgment and operational skill, but also a clear vision for how the Investigations Division can evolve to meet the growing and changing needs of the public. Their appointment as Chief reflects both their outstanding performance and the deep respect they have earned from colleagues across the agency.”
Chief Roberts’ appointment represents the culmination of more than 17 years of dedicated service to the Commission. Throughout their MCAD tenure, they have held multiple, staff, leadership, and advisory roles within the Investigations Division, consistently taking on increased responsibility and spearheading initiatives designed to modernize investigative practices and improve staff support systems. They also served as the MCAD’s SEIU/NAGE Unit 6 Union Steward for Local 207 from 2015 to 2025, until taking on the acting role. As Acting Chief, they successfully guided the division through transition, introduced process improvements that will have lasting impact as the Commission innovates its work to better serve the Commonwealth, and fostered a culture grounded in accountability and collaboration.
“I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to continue serving the Commission in this capacity,” said Chief Roberts. “The work of the Investigations Division is central to the MCAD’s mission, and I am proud of what our team has accomplished together. I look forward to building on the progress we’ve made and strengthening our efforts to ensure effective enforcement of Massachusetts’ anti-discrimination laws.”
The MCAD congratulates Chief Roberts on this well-deserved appointment and looks forward to the further advancement of the agency’s mission under their leadership.
