Massachusetts Awarded $21.2 Million to Protect Communities from Malicious Drone Activity

 

Grants will bolster law enforcement capabilities for FIFA World Cup 2026 and other Large-Scale Events

BRAINTREE — The Healey-Driscoll Administration announced that Massachusetts State Police, the Boston Police Department, and the Foxborough Police Department will receive grants totaling $21,234,781 through the state’s application for the federal Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS) Grant Program.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) administers this grant program to support training, personnel and equipment to protect against the security risks created by malicious use of drones. As the State Administrative Agency for FEMA grants in Massachusetts, the Office of Grants and Research (OGR) accepted funding requests from state and local entities for this program. FEMA prioritized requests from agencies using the funds to strengthen security for the 2026 World Cup games and related events. Award decisions and funding amounts were determined by FEMA.

“The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be a highlight of an exciting year in Massachusetts, and we are committed to ensuring that everyone can enjoy the event safely,” said Governor Maura Healey. “These grants will help state and local police agencies bolster security, training and equipment to keep residents and visitors safe throughout the games and surrounding celebrations.”

This funding strengthens resilience and preparedness in communities across Massachusetts,” said Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll. “By supporting planning and coordination among federal, state, and local partners, we ensure that law enforcement has the tools and capacity to respond effectively to changing security needs.”

“This investment will strengthen our operational capabilities, from personnel to technology, so law enforcement can respond quickly and effectively,” said Public Safety and Security Secretary Gina Kwon. “Collaboration across agencies is essential, and these grants ensure state and local partners are equipped to safeguard residents and visitors during major events like the World Cup.”

“These funds will make a measurable improvement in law enforcement’s ability to protect our communities. Large venue security is a critical element of our homeland security programs, and these grants will help ensure that residents and visitors are able to safely enjoy the World Cup games and other large-scale events,” said Office of Grants and Research Executive Director Kevin Stanton.
