API Applauds House Passage of Bipartisan Permitting Legislation
WASHINGTON, December 12, 2025 — American Petroleum Institute (API) President and CEO Mike Sommers issued the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed bipartisan legislation to modernize the federal permitting process, including the Improving Interagency Coordination for Pipeline Reviews Act (H.R. 3668) and the Promoting Efficient Review for Modern Infrastructure Today (PERMIT) Act (H.R. 3898):
“We applaud the House for advancing bipartisan legislation to modernize permitting and fix a system that’s long been broken. By restoring proper scope of reviews and addressing state abuse of the Clean Water Act, these bills help unlock the infrastructure America needs to meet growing demand for affordable, reliable energy. We thank Representatives Mike Collins and Richard Hudson for their leadership, and we will continue working with policymakers to advance comprehensive, bipartisan reform.”
The American Petroleum Institute (API) represents all segments of America’s oil and natural gas industry, supporting nearly 11 million U.S. jobs. With approximately 600 members, API companies produce, process, and distribute the majority of the nation’s energy. Founded in 1919, API has developed over 800 standards to enhance operational and environmental safety, efficiency, and sustainability.
