MassDEP Fines Property Owner for Cleanup Violations at Former Gas Station Site in Uxbridge

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has assessed an $8,156 penalty against Adam Brothers Towing, LLC, of Uxbridge for violating state oil spill cleanup regulations at its property at 250 Providence Street, the former site of a gas station. 

In December 2001, gasoline was released from the station into groundwater near homes and businesses that use individual private wells for their drinking water supply. The previous property owner submitted a cleanup plan to MassDEP in 2006. When Adam Brothers Towing became the new owner of the property in 2021, it was required to take on site cleanup activities. Although Adam Brothers Towing conducted sampling of the nearby private wells, it failed to complete the required cleanup despite receiving formal notice to do so. In addition to the penalty, MassDEP has ordered the company to complete the cleanup.

“New property owners of contaminated sites must take all necessary actions to assess risks and complete cleanup,” said Mary Jude Pigsley, director of the MassDEP Central Regional Office in Worcester. “MassDEP will take appropriate enforcement action, including assessing penalties, to ensure that timely remediation of contaminated sites continues after property transfers.”
