MassDEP Fines Gas Station Operator for Cleanup Violation in Auburn

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has issued a consent order requiring Greige Summit, Inc., to pay a $10,000 penalty for violating the state cleanup regulations at the company’s gas station at 321 Southbridge Street in Auburn. 



In October 2024, Greige Summit began renovations at the gas station, which included replacing underground fuel storage tanks. However, the company did not submit required plans for the work until January 2025, after the renovations were complete. State regulations require filing of plans before starting remedial work at a regulated disposal site.



Under the terms of the consent order, Greige Summit must pay a $10,000 penalty, $5,000 of which would be suspended if the company does not violate any provision of the order.



"Owners and operators of existing disposal sites must submit plans to MassDEP before starting any project likely to encounter contamination from oil or hazardous material," said Mary Jude Pigsley, director of MassDEP’s Central Regional Office in Worcester. "Failing to do so prevents MassDEP from timely reviewing projects for potential risks to the health, safety, and welfare of people and the environment, and may result in the imposition of penalties."



In addition to the penalty, MassDEP’s consent order directs Greige Summit to train its personnel in oil spill notification and response requirements.
