Statement from CEO Maura Sullivan: The Arc’s Call to Action for Dignity

November 28, 2025

President Trump’s ignorant and malicious use of the word “retarded” is deeply disturbing and must not be tolerated. The Arc of Massachusetts stands firmly against the use of the “R-word” by any political leader, public figure, or member of society.

This language degrades and disrespects the disability community, ignoring the decades of progress we have fought for. The “R-word” is a painful reminder of a history where individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities had to fight for their basic human rights. Language shapes attitudes, beliefs, and policy. We must reject this administration’s attempt to set us back decades.

Immediate Call to Action for Massachusetts

We urge the Massachusetts Legislature and Governor to immediately sign the Archaic Language Bill into law. This critical legislation, which has passed both the House and Senate, is awaiting the Governor’s signature.  It will finally remove hundreds of sections of outdated and offensive language from our chapter law, replacing it with person-first language.

A key goal at The Arc of Massachusetts is to fortify our state against this administration’s devaluing of people with disabilities through attacks on our policy, cuts to our services, misinformation, and rhetoric. The Commonwealth can now step up and finally sign The Archaic Language Bill into law, which is an imperative move to protect and stand up for disability rights.

Take action with The Arc now to ensure this bill is signed and to stand up against any leader whose words devalue the disability community.
