A Victory for Massachusetts Transit Workers: S.2531 Passes the Senate
NOV132025
Today marks a major milestone for transit worker safety in Massachusetts. The Senate has passed Bill S.2531, moving the crucial transit assault legislation one step closer to becoming law — next stop: Governor Maura Healey’s desk!
This legislation strengthens penalties for assaulting public transit workers, sending a clear message that attacks on bus operators, train drivers, station attendants, and all frontline transit personnel will not be tolerated. It’s an important step toward ensuring a safer workplace for those who keep our transit system running every day.
Local 589 members deserve to feel safe on the job, and this bill reflects the commitment of lawmakers to protecting them. We extend our gratitude to both the House and Senate for recognizing the importance of this vital protection.
We also want to thank our members who attended hearings and advocated for this legislation, along with the unions in our coalition of transit worker organizations who supported this effort.
With S.2531, we’re one step closer to safer workplaces and stronger protections for Massachusetts transit workers.
