H.R. 1 aims to keep people in the dark about its historic cuts to health care. And while we’re left in the shadows, coverage and care for millions are being stripped away — with Black families carrying the heaviest burden because of systemic racism, classism, and economic inequities. 



 



This is not hypothetical. The harm is already here: shuttered hospitals, rising premiums, and millions families who are about to lose coverage.



 



At the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Annual Legislative Conference (#ALC54) last week, Community Catalyst convened a powerhouse panel with leaders from labor, civil rights, and policy.



 



Together, we shined a light on what H.R. 1 means for Black health and economic wellbeing — and made clear that this is the fight of our lifetime.



 



The numbers tell a devastating story: 










  • 65% of Black mothers who rely on Medicaid are now at greater risk. 

  • Hospitals in Black neighborhoods are four times more likely to close. 

  • Without ACA tax credits, 1.1 million Black people could lose coverage, with premiums doubling in some states. 









These are not abstract statistics. They represent families, workers, and communities whose stability is being stripped away. And unless we act together, the harm will only deepen.

This is the fight of our lifetime: to protect coverage, prevent medical debt, and ensure health care is treated as a right — not a privilege.
