IRS Announces Major Win for Church Autonomy and Religious Liberty

Earlier this month, the IRS entered a legally binding consent decree which states that it will no longer interpret a federal law called the “Johnson Amendment” to prohibit churches from endorsing political candidates.

For over 50 years, this law had forced pastors to walk on eggshells every election season, wondering how much political engagement was too much. If they crossed the line, even accidentally, their church could lose their tax-exempt status. MFI and many other groups long considered this rule to be an unconstitutional infringement on the rights of churches to speak truth on crucial political and cultural issues.

Now, pastors no longer have to fear being penalized for faithfully shepherding their congregations on these issues. Our friends at Florida Family Voice have put together an excellent Q & A resource explaining this recent IRS decision and how it will apply to your church. You can find it below.
