QUINCY – On Saturday, June 21, 2025, children, friends, and family will have an opportunity to visit Nut Island for a day of fun and fishing from 10:00AM to 2:00PM. The event, “Reel Fun Fishing Day at Nut Island”, will provide the public with an excellent opportunity to learn how to fish and experience the island’s natural and recreational resources. Tickets to the free event can be secured by visiting the program’s Eventbrite webpage.
The “Reel Fun Fishing Day at Nut Island” event features several entertaining and enriching opportunities for children and their families, including:
- Learning how to fish for and identify striped bass and winter flounder with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries and the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife’s Angler Education Program (rods, bait, and tackle provided);
- Meeting National Park Service Rangers and be sworn in as an *official* Boston Harbor Islands Junior Angler;
- Playing games, coloring, and learning “what not to flush” with the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority and the New England Water Environment Association;
- Enjoying a picnic with a view (guests can bring a lunch and refillable water bottle); and,
- Exploring self-guided trails throughout Nut Island.
Participants will park at the Atherton Hough Elementary School (1084 Sea Street, Quincy, MA 02169) and follow signs to the parking lot, where a shuttle to Nut Island will be provided. If possible, guests should carpool or take public transportation, as parking for the event is limited. A shuttle will be running from the school to the island every 30 minutes, beginning at 10:00AM and ending at 1:00PM. Shuttle service from Nut Island back to the Atherton Hough Elementary School parking lot will also run approximately every 30 minutes beginning at 11:15AM, with the last trip departing at 2:00PM.
Nut Island is located within Boston Harbor and part of the Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park. The former island is connected to the mainland and can be reached via a causeway at the end of Houghs Neck in Quincy, MA. The island features recreational trails, benches, and a fishing pier for the public to utilize. Centuries ago, colonists used the island to graze cattle; now it serves as a critical site housing a headworks facility, which works in conjunction with the Deer Island Wastewater Treatment Plant that is operated and managed by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority.
The “Reel Fun Fishing Day at Nut Island” is presented by the National Park Service (NPS), DMF, MassWildlife, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), the MWRA, and with generous support from the National Park Foundation and L.L. Bean.
