MassDEP Fines Stow Holdings, LLC, for Drinking Water and Wastewater Violations

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has penalized Stow Holdings, LLC, a total of $8,429 for violations of state drinking water and groundwater discharge permit regulations. The violations occurred at its public water system at Stow Acres Country Club, which serves a golf course and two commercial buildings.

"All water suppliers have a responsibility to provide safe drinking water to their customers," said Mary Jude Pigsley, director of MassDEP’s Central Regional Office in Worcester. "This enforcement ensures Stow Holdings will operate and maintain its water system in compliance with regulations and protect the health and the environment of the community it serves."

Stow Holdings' public water system includes one groundwater well, sediment filters and water softeners. During a routine inspection of the water system, MassDEP observed that the company was releasing wastewater from the water softeners to the ground without a permit. The company also violated drinking water regulations by applying fertilizer within the water supply well’s water protection area; failing to replace corroded pressure tanks; and failing to install backflow prevention devices to eliminate potential cross contamination.

Under the terms of the Administrative Consent Order, Stow Holdings has agreed to pay the penalty of $8,429 and has stopped applying fertilizer within the water protection area. The company has also redirected backwash wastewater from its water softeners to an appropriate location and is taking necessary actions to comply with applicable environmental regulations.
