Today, the Trump administration ordered 700 U.S. Marines to join the 2,000 unrequested, federally activated National Guard troops in Los Angeles in response to this weekend’s protests over ICE’s presence and mass deportation efforts. The aggressive posturing by this administration can only be interpreted as a blatant attempt to inflame and escalate tensions in a situation he and his administration created.
Statement of Common Cause President and CEO, Virginia Kase Solomón:
We stand in solidarity with the people of Los Angeles during this time of fear and unrest.
The right to protest is protected by the United States Constitution. Yet, President Trump has chosen to weaponize the National Guard and the Marines against the American people.
Militarizing our neighborhoods in this way is an overextension of power that endangers our families, our freedoms, and our futures. Our communities need justice, not troops.
We reaffirm our peaceful fight for justice through due process – in the courts, in the legislature, and in the streets through organized, nonviolent action.
