HOPKINTON - Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan announced today that a Middlesex Jury has convicted former Hopkinton Deputy Chief of Police, John “Jay” Porter, of three charges of Rape of a Child. The assault on the student occurred while he was assigned as a school resource officer in the Town of Hopkinton school system.
The incidents occurred during 2004 and 2005 while the victim was a 15-year-old student. During that time Porter assaulted the victim on multiple occasions off school property.
“The defendant in this case abused his position of power to take advantage of and manipulate a child to gain her trust before sexually assaulting her on multiple occasions,” said District Attorney Marian Ryan.
During her ninth and tenth grades at Hopkinton High School, the victim would often go see the School Resource Officer, John Porter for support. That relationship changed during tenth grade, going from one of a trusted adult and student to a flirtatious then sexual one.
On one occasion the victim was excused early from school. Officer Porter volunteered to drive her home. He stopped at the station and exchanged his police vehicle for his personal one. On the way to the victim’s house, he stopped the car. In the front seat of the car he began kissing and then touching the victim all over her body before assaulting her.
On another occasion later that same year, the victim was babysitting at Porter’s Hopedale home. Porter drove her home and on the way home to Hopkinton he began to discuss their relationship before again assaulting the victim.
This investigation was conducted by the District Attorney’s Office and the Massachusetts State Police. The prosecutor assigned was Assistant District Attorney Maren Schrader and Victim Witness Advocate was Meaghan McCarthy.
Sentencing in this case is scheduled for June 18, 2025 at 2:00 p.m.
