MFI Joins National Effort to Defend Parental Rights
This month, MFI proudly joined dozens of allied organizations across the country in signing a letter to Congress in support of the Families’ Rights and Responsibilities Act (FRRA). This legislation marks a crucial step forward in protecting the God-given rights of parents to direct the upbringing, education, and care of their children.
The timing of this letter was no coincidence. It was delivered to members of Congress on June 2, 2025, just one day after the 100th anniversary of Pierce v. Society of Sisters, the U.S. Supreme Court decision that firmly established parental authority as a fundamental right. That 1925 ruling declared that “the child is not the mere creature of the State,” affirming that it is parents, not bureaucrats or politicians, who are entrusted with shaping their children’s futures.
Yet today, that principle is under attack.
Across the country, federal programs and policies are increasingly bypassing, undermining, or outright excluding parents from decisions that directly impact their children. From military schools secretly “socially transitioning” students behind parents’ backs to federally funded health clinics providing contraceptives and abortion pills to minors without parental knowledge, the examples are as alarming as they are widespread.
Even more troubling, courts have failed to consistently treat parental rights with the constitutional protection they deserve. Without proper legal safeguards, these rights are easily overridden by government agencies that claim to know better than mothers and fathers.
That’s why the FRRA is so important. It restores the proper standard of judicial review—strict scrutiny—when it comes to violations of parental rights by federal entities. This is the same level of protection afforded to other fundamental rights, like free speech and religious liberty. It ensures that no parent is left powerless when the government interferes in their child’s life.
Under the FRRA, parents will gain clear legal standing to challenge federal overreach. They will be guaranteed access to their children’s education and medical records. And they will have a say in the policies that shape their children’s health, well-being, and education.
These are not radical demands, they’re common sense. Parents deserve to be informed. Children deserve to be protected. And the government must be held accountable when it crosses the line.
MFI believes that strong families form the foundation of a strong society. The FRRA reflects the values we fight for every day: accountability, transparency, and choice. It empowers parents to do what they are called to do, to raise and guide their children according to their faith, values, and wisdom.
As we mark a century since Pierce v. Society of Sisters, we are reminded that the fight for parental rights is far from over. The Promise Coalition letter represents a unified voice rising in defense of families across America. We’re honored to add our name to it, and we invite you to raise your voice with us.
Let’s work together to ensure that parents, not politicians, remain the primary decision-makers in their children’s lives.
