Ranked Choice Voting Is the Wrong Move for Boston

Despite massive issues administering the city’s current electoral, some Boston city councilors are pushing to bring Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) to the city’s elections. This is the wrong solution at the worst possible time.

RCV is a complicated, multi-round voting system that confuses voters, discards ballots, and benefits political insiders. It's being sold as reform, but in reality, it undermines transparency, trust, and accountability.

Meanwhile, Boston’s own Elections Department is under state receivership for failing at its most basic responsibilities—like ballot security and election oversight. Before they experiment with a convoluted new system, Mayor Wu and the City Council should demand competence in the one they already have.

Statewide, Massachusetts voters have already rejected RCV once. Cities and states across the country are now doing the same. Boston should listen and focus on restoring trust, not making elections harder to follow.
