BOSTON — Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell today issued the following statement in response to the First Circuit Court of Appeals’ ruling in Capen and National Association for Gun Rights v. Campbell, upholding at a preliminary stage the state’s ban on the sale and possession of assault weapons and large capacity ammunition magazines.

“Massachusetts has some of the strongest common sense gun laws in the country, and we know they are effective in ensuring our communities, especially our children, remain safe. The recent First Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision to uphold Massachusetts’ assault weapons ban is a tremendous victory for our state, and I will continue to vigorously defend these laws,” said AG Campbell.

On Background:

  • AG Campbell has a strong record of defending common sense gun laws here in Massachusetts and supporting other states like Illinois, California, and Delaware in their efforts to do the same.

  • Earlier this month, AG Campbell awarded $1 million to ten organizations that will promote gun violence prevention across the Commonwealth as part of her ongoing efforts to bolster community-based gun violence prevention work and recognize gun violence as a public health concern.
