Beacon Hill’s Budget Fantasy: $61.4 Billion and Still Ignoring Reality

The Massachusetts House of Representatives just released its latest budget proposal for FY26 — and it’s a masterclass in reckless spending and denial.

Despite talking tough about the potential end of some federal funding and looming fiscal uncertainty, House leadership unveiled a $61.4 billion budget that increases spending by more than 6%, knowingly underfunding some items and it relies on one-time revenues to make the numbers work. If this is their version of caution, taxpayers across Massachusetts should be deeply concerned.

Over the last seven years, the state budget has ballooned by a whopping 50%. Beacon Hill built this oversized structure during a period of temporary surpluses and federal dollar giveaways and now, instead of reining it in, they’re pretending the good times will never end.

The budget even expands taxpayer-subsidized healthcare through ConnectorCare—at the same time lawmakers claim they’re bracing for federal Medicaid cuts. That kind of contradiction isn’t planning; it’s posturing.

To make matters worse, nearly $1.6 billion in one-time revenues are being used to prop up this spending plan, including funds normally meant for the state’s rainy day reserve. That’s not fiscal discipline—it’s a dangerous gamble.

State Attorney General Andrea Campbell's office also got a big increase, despite having yet to enforce the voter approved law of auditing the legislature. The Speaker is giving the Attorney General's office a $5.4 million dollar increase from last year, even more than what the Governor’s budget called for.

The federal government is finally beginning to show some restraint. It’s time for Beacon Hill to do the same. Taxpayers deserve a budget grounded in stability, responsibility, and honesty, not another bloated plan that kicks the can down the road.

Even though the House didn’t include Governor Healey’s tax increases in their budget, this doesn’t mean they won’t try them down the road as their spending habits catch up with them. Now more than ever, we must push back against Governor Healey’s agenda of higher taxes and runaway spending. Add your name and join the growing chorus of Massachusetts residents demanding real fiscal reform:
