Massachusetts is on its way to implementing the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) which was signed into law in November as part of the state's economic development legislation. The process is expected to take about 12 months, and once operational will allow qualified Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) to obtain a multistate license, granting them the ability to practice in any of the 40+ participating states without needing individual state licenses.
The Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing has issued an update on the implementation process which can be found HERE .
What does this mean for APRNs in Massachusetts?
The NLC will not impact APRN Licensing. The Nurse License Compact is different from the APRN Compact which has yet to be implemented nationally and has not been passed in Massachusetts.
Before the APRN compact can be implemented, at least seven states need to enact it through legislation. As of now, fewer than seven states have adopted the APRN Compact, so it has not yet reached the threshold for implementation. This means that APRNs must still obtain individual state licensure to practice across state lines unless they work in states with specific reciprocity agreements.
