Heading into the fall election, Massachusetts candidates and committees hold millions of dollars
in campaign funds, according to a data analysis from the Office of Campaign and Political
Finance’s (OCPF) electronic filing system. The analysis did not include independent expenditure
political action committees, statewide ballot question committees and local party committees,
which file periodic reports and are not in the depository system of reporting.
In total, the campaigns registered with OCPF held $57,236,088 as of July 31. Of this total,
$42,834,920 is held by the 1,167 candidates organized with the agency. The remaining
$14,401,168 is held by political action committees and state parties.
The 403 candidates on the 2024 primary and general elections ballots had $19,151,239 in their
accounts as of July 31. These funds support candidates running for House, Senate, clerk of
courts, register of deeds, register of probate, governor’s council and county commissioner.
While it is not mandatory for candidates to raise and spend money, nearly all candidates on the
state level engage in financial activity. The 2024 ballot includes 290 Democrats holding $16.7
million, 74 Republicans with $2.3 million and 39 Unenrolled with $95,198.
OCPF is an independent agency responsible for administering the state’s campaign finance law.
It provides a platform at www.ocpf.us for the disclosure of campaign finance activity in
Massachusetts. The totals in this analysis represent depository committees, which collaborate
with banks to file monthly reports on their behalf.
