Apprenticeship Tax Credit Begins July 1

An Apprenticeship Tax Credit program created in the 2018 Economic Stimulus bill will become available to Massachusetts companies on July 1.

The program authorized $2.5 million to be made available annually to help employers pay for apprentices for certain occupations including: computers; health technologists and technicians; healthcare support; and product manufacturing. These industries are defined by Bureau of Labor Statistics codes, and in the case of manufacturers, also a NAICS code (31-33).

The credit is equal to either $4,800 OR 50 percent of the wages paid to the apprentice, whichever is less. The employer must employ the apprentice in Massachusetts for at least 180 days in the tax year, register as an apprenticeship program sponsor, and enter into an apprenticeship agreement.
