Business & Civic Leaders host Governor Baker at Education Legislative Briefing

Boston Leaders for Education and the Massachusetts Business Alliance for Education will host Governor Charlie Baker for a Legislative Briefing breakfast on Tuesday morning, calling for additional education funding to be accompanied by evidence-based reforms.

A majority of event attendees signed on to a letter delivered earlier this year to Governor Baker, Senate President Spilka, and House Speaker DeLeo, calling for new education funding to be spent on measures that will close achievement, opportunity, and skills gaps. As the letter states, “Experience, research, and practice-based evidence, including evidence from bright spots of success in our state, have shown that just putting more money into the system — even when expressly for the purpose of addressing achievement gaps — does not get us improved outcomes.”

“With the senate budget proposal now out, the debate around school funding is really taking shape,” said Ed Lambert, Jr., executive director of the Massachusetts Business Alliance for Education.  “It’s imperative that the business community convey to the Governor, the Senate and the House that funding must be leveraged to close gaps that, if not addressed, will continue to threaten the vitality of our workforce.”
